LOBO applies the latest technology for a Millenium Event Projection on Cape Town's Table Mountain

Some spectators might not have trusted their eyes when CNN reported about one of this year's most spectacular laser projections. On the occasion of a millenium event a huge green watch was floating over Cape Town. It was projected on the famous Table Mountain towering above the city and being visible from very far.

This about 1 km large and 700 m high mountain with its plain front facing the city is perfect for such an event. The projection itself has been done by LOBO, the laser specialist from Aalen/Germany. As common projection media such as slides, video or spotlight are not strong enough for a projection size of more than 50 m, only laser technology can be applied. However, a few months ago even with the strongest laser this project could not have been carried out in such a satisfactory way. For a projection distance of almost one kilometer and the usual divergence of a laser beam the light power would not have been strong enough.

The technical director of this project, Dipl. Ing. Richard Pollak explains: "We are very lucky that just before this event Coherent finished their development of a new diode pumped solid state laser. With a light power of 10 watt only, even in extremely large distances its beam does not become significantly wider. Furthermore, its color is exactly within this wavelength for which the human eye is most sensitive. The light power of this system can be compared to lasers of more than 50 watt but unlike the common Neodym-YAG-lasers it projects extremely sharp pictures in large distances."

Being the first to purchase this completely new laser LOBO could take advantage of another quality of this system. Unlike conventional lasers that need 15.000 - 60.000 Watts and an enormous quantity of water for cooling, the new laser can be run by a small 2kW generator and a compact heat exchanger. The laser itself is slightly larger than a shoe box. Pollak: "This fact enabled us to move easily in order to find the best position for the event. A team checked whether the projection could be seen from the city. We finally decided to position the laser on a road leading to Table Mountain, far away from any electricity or water supply. With a conventional system this project could have been carried out with an incredible demand of material only."

Within a few hours only the system was installed and ready for the projection. .
